Inhibitory Effects of Brazilian Propolis on Tumor Promotion in Two-Stage Mouse Skin Carcinogenesis

چکیده
Propolis is produced by honeybees and has many biological properties, including immunomodulatory, antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-cancer actions. Five ethanol extracts of Brazilian propolis were tested for inhibition of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice. The ethanol extract of Brazilian propolis AF-08 markedly inhibited TPA-induced inflammatory ear edema in mice. This extract suppressed tumor promotion by TPA following initiation with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in mouse skin. Moronic acid, a major component of Brazilian propolis AF-08, markedly inhibited two-stage carcinogenesis by DMBA plus TPA. These results suggest that Brazilian propolis AF-08 contributes to the prevention of cancer.

Inhibitory effect of stevioside on tumor promotion by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate in two-stage carcinogenesis in mouse skin.
Four steviol (ent-kaurene-type diterpenoid) glycosides, stevioside, rebaudiosides A and C, and dulcoside A, have been isolated from Stevia rebaudiana BERTONI. These compounds showed strong inhibitory activity against 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice. The 50% inhibitory dose of these compounds for TPA-induced inflammation was 54.1-291.6 micro g/ear. Further...

Topical application of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a constituent of the propolis of honeybee hives, to the backs of CD-1 mice previously initiated with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) inhibited 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced tumor promotion and the formation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxyuridine (HMdU) in epidermal DNA. Topical application of 5 nmol TPA twice wee...
متن کاملLinoleic Acid Blocks the Inhibitory Effects of Caffeine on Tumour Promotion by 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-Acetate in Two-Stage Carcinogenesis in Mouse Skin
The present study assessed the in vivo effects of fatty acids on inflammation and carcinogenesis in mice. Fifteen fatty acids were examined for their effects on the inhibitory effect of caffeine on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13acetate (TPA)-induced ear oedema in mice. Furthermore, linoleic acid was studied for its effects on the inhibitory effect of caffeine on carcinogenesis in mouse skin initi...
متن کاملDual inhibition of both the epidermal growth factor receptor and erbB2 effectively inhibits the promotion of skin tumors during two-stage carcinogenesis.
The erbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases are known to play important roles in normal epithelial development and epithelial neoplasia. Considerable evidence also suggests that signaling through the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays an important role in multistage skin carcinogenesis in mice; however, less is known about the role of erbB2. In this study, to further examine the rol...
متن کاملStage-specific disruption of Stat3 demonstrates a direct requirement during both the initiation and promotion stages of mouse skin tumorigenesis.
Constitutive activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) has been found in a variety of human malignancies and has been suggested to play an important role in carcinogenesis. Recently, our laboratory demonstrated that Stat3 is required for the development of skin tumors via two-stage carcinogenesis using skin-specific loss-of-function transgenic mice. To investigate...
